EZ Power Steering specialises in electric power steering conversion kits designed specifically for classic and vintage vehicles. Their Land Rover range covers Series II, Series III and Defender models in both left and right hand drive configurations, with kits developed to suit the specific engineering characteristics of each.
Unlike hydraulic power steering conversions, EZ kits require no pump, no fluid, no hoses and no belts — freeing up valuable space in the engine compartment and eliminating the risk of fluid leaks. The electric assistance draws only 5–7 amps during manoeuvring and has no impact on engine power output, unlike hydraulic systems which typically consume 3–4 horsepower to operate.
Designed Around Your Vehicle
One of the key engineering challenges with Series Land Rovers is the one-piece steering column — there is no U-joint or hardy disc as found on later models. EZ Power Steering has engineered specifically around this constraint, supplying Series kits with a new worm and sector, bearings and gasket so that the original steering box can be properly overhauled as part of the installation. No cutting, no welding, no irreversible modifications to your original column.
For Defender models, the installation is equally sympathetic — fitted under the dashboard, with all original controls, switches and trim returning to their standard positions. The result looks factory, feels modern and can be reversed if required.
Adjustable Assistance to Suit Your Driving
EZ systems use a torsion sensor and ECU to calculate the appropriate level of assistance for your inputs and speed. The assistance level is factory-set to suit the specific vehicle model but can be adjusted by the driver — useful if you want a lighter feel for low-speed manoeuvring or prefer more road feedback at motorway speeds. Should the system ever fail, a built-in clutch unit disengages the motor from the steering column, ensuring the steering always functions freely as a pure manual system.
